Spring Break Savings Plan
Spring break is a staple for every college student, and many spend the week far away from campus. But, the costs associated with traveling to and staying in your chosen spring break destination may quickly add up. That said, it’s crucial to have a spring break savings plan. We’ll look at a few ways you can save money this spring break.
Determine your budget
Money is the ultimate decider of when, and how, you’ll spend your spring break. So, it’s wise to determine how much you can spend before planning your trip. Most college students are already low on funds, so don’t book a trip that will put you in financial straits. Your budget can also help you decide your spring break travel destination.
Determine your destination
Popular spring break destinations, like Florida and coastal Texas, are going to be more expensive to travel to and stay in around spring break. That said, it might be wise to take the road less traveled. There are lots of destinations that are just as beautiful, and less expensive, than traditional spring break hot spots. If you’re dead set on a well-sought-after spring break locale, consider staying in an Airbnb or camping to save money on lodging.
Book a cheaper flight
Airfare is often your largest spring break expense, therefore, it’s a good idea to save money on it when you can. Avoid flying during peak travel times, like weekends or in the middle of the day. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are generally the cheapest days to fly. You can also save money on these flights by booking them in advance. Taking a red-eye flight or flying into/out of less popular airports is another way you can save money on a flight. If you have travel points from a credit card or airline program, consider using them to save money.
Bundle
You may find that bundling hotels, flights, or rental cars can save you money in the long run. When determining your budget and destination, it’s wise to look for bundle deals. Many travel websites, like Expedia.com and Kayak.com, can help you find bundle deals. Groupon can also help you find bundles, in addition to coupons for activities you may enjoy. Some airline companies even offer bundle deals, you just have to look.
Pack lightly
Packing only what you need is just another way to save money this spring break. When flying to your spring break destination, pack only a carry-on bag. A checked bag will cost you extra, plus you run the risk of it being lost. When bringing cash, again, pack only what you need. The more cash you bring, the more you’ll be inclined to spend. This can lead to impulse buys.
Avoid impulse buys
When vacationing, it can be easy to submit to impulse purchases. Therefore, it’s a good idea to stick to your budget. Going out for food and drinks can be fun when on vacation, but try to avoid ordering impulse drinks or appetizers you don’t plan on fully enjoying. You should also avoid expensive, high-end restaurants. A great way to save money while on vacation is by cooking some of your own meals. You can also purchase your own drinks and mixers for DIY cocktails. Plus, you won’t have to wait at the bar for a drink you may not like!
Spring break is a memorable experience for every college student. Plus, it doesn’t always have to break the bank. As long as you have a spring break savings plan in place, you’ll be on good financial terms.
